On 10th April 2018, the Malaysian Corporate Counsel Association (MCCA) organised with the support of Inns of Court Malaysia (ICM) the Inaugural Corporate Counsel Conference in the Intercontinental Hotel, Kuala Lumpur.

The President of MCCA Thavakumar Kandiahpillai, Group Head, Legal and General Counsel of Sapura Kencana Petroleum welcomed the President of Inns of Court Malaysia (ICM), YABhg. Tun Arifin Bin Zakaria in delivering the VIP Keynote Address titled “The Development of the Legal Arena: Where we are today; What’s coming tomorrow”. The event was attended by corporate counsel from various organisations including public listed companies, government linked companies and multinationals.

YABhg. Tun Arifin Bin Zakaria shared with participants on all transformational work that was carried out to ensure the speedy and efficient disposal of cases, the modern electronic systems adopted by the Courts, the introduction of new courts and in keeping up with times. Frank views were also discussed on the realities of legal practice, managing of cases and court procedures by Judges. YABhg. Tun Arifin Bin Zakaria also introduced about ICM and the role that ICM can play in strengthening the nexus of corporate counsel, judiciary and legal practitioners. The diversity of members of ICM is also relevant to the business community, in sharing and updating knowledge and legal skills.

The theme of the conference is “Spotting and Overcoming Disruptive Trends in the Legal Landscape”. Together, ICM is delighted to support the business community to overcome disruptive trends in the legal landscape, and turning all of these challenges into opportunities for a vibrant business community for corporate Malaysia. YABhg. Tun Arifin Bin Zakaria then concluded with some personal insights with wise anecdotes on the way forward.

The panel then answered some questions, in an interactive style. The Conference spans over 2 days, covering topical issues with international speakers and local experts on topics such as enforcement of Competition Act 2010; communications strategy of in-house counsel; impact of fintech on islamic finance; fintech innovation
blockchain & crypto-currency,
leveraging technology to offer Shariah-compliant investment solutions; complying with the PDPA and Getting Ready For Compliance with the GDPR; IP Considerations in M&A transactions; constitutional democacy in Malaysia; best practices for using contract templates and implementing standard policies in multinational companies; RFPs to obtain legal services; alternative dispute resolutions; corporate restructuring; duties and liabilities of in-house counsel; and whistleblowing reporting.
