KUCHING: The Inns of Court Malaysia (ICM) initiative is set to reshape the country’s legal landscape.

The innitiative is based on models from Britain and the United States while incorporating a uniquely Malaysian approach.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said ICM exposes and mobilises professionals from across the legal spectrum, especially students, in developing high-level legal professional skills.

“Soon, with ICM at the forefront, we will witness the rise of Malaysian barristers trained locally, though not ‘King’s Counsel’, who are equipped to be experts and authoritative in law, both in terms of procedure and substance.

“This also enables them to gain confidence, elegance, and refined social skills to thrive in any environment, and ultimately, more outstanding Malaysians will be recognised as ‘Benchers’,” he said.

He said this during the ICM Grand Dinner held in conjunction with the inaugural Benching Ceremony of Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar at Raia Hotel here on Saturday.

He added that this effort will further strengthen Malaysia’s position in developing its own jurisprudence that is relevant to local conditions.

In addition, Fadillah emphasised that there is no need for blind adherence to foreign precedents that could undermine justice and negatively impact those involved in legal proceedings.

“We also have our own economic dynamics, social structures, and local challenges that require localised solutions.

“Let Malaysian jurisprudence grow confidently, rooted in our unique identity, so that one day it will be a respected point of reference throughout the Commonwealth,” he said.
