On 29 March 2018, Inns of Court Malaysia organised the first Legal Education Series entitled the Conduct of Trials/Appeals and Advocacy: Perspectives from the Bench, which was an interactive session primarily meant for lawyers entering the arena of trials and appeals. It was held at the Kuala Lumpur High Court Complex.
The moderator for the event was Y.A. Tuan Nantha Balan, Judge of the High Court, Kuala Lumpur. There were four speakers invited from the High Court and Court of Appeal judges. They were Y.A. Dato’ Mary Lim Thiam Suan, Judge of Court of Appeal; Y.A. Datuk Harmindar Singh, Judge of Court of Appeal; and Y.A. Tuan Azizul Azmi bin Adnan, Judge of the High Court, Kuala Lumpur.
The event was attended by practising lawyers from various law firms here in Malaysia as well as a number of VIP’s such as The Right Honourable Tun Arifin Zakaria, President of the Inns of Court Malaysia (ICM); Tun Zaki Azmi, former Chief Justice of Malaysia; Tun Dato’ Seri Md Raus bin Sharif, current Chief Justice of Malaysia and a number of Chancellors and Vice Chancellors from both public and private universities including KDU’s very own Prof Dr Hiew Pang Leang, Vice Chancellor of KDU University College and Mr. Shanker Sathivellu, Deputy Vice Chancellor – Administration of KDU UC.
Five students from KDU Law School were chosen to marshal this event along with students from other universities. At 3.30pm, the event commenced with the recital of prayers. The Honorary Secretary of the Inns of Court Malaysia, Ms. Mary-Ann Ooi Suan Kim welcomed the participants and gave a short introduction of the panel of speakers. The Right Honourable Tun Arifin Zakaria, President of the Inns of Court Malaysia then gave a welcome speech and short information on ICM and its benefits as well as the membership charges.
The first speaker was Y.A. Tuan Azizul Azmi bin Adnan, who spoke on Effective Case Management and the Conduct of Trials. At 4.30pm, everyone was welcomed to some light refreshments. Then, Y.A. Dato’ Mary Lim Thiam Suan gave a talk on Conduct of Appeals and Appellate Advocacy in the Civil Division followed by Y.A. Harmindar Singh who touched on the topic of Conduct of Trials and Appellate Advocacy of the Criminal Division and ended his speech with a Q&A session to the floor. Once the Q&A session ended, Tun Dato’ Seri Md Raus bin Sharif was invited on stage to give his speech which was later on followed by a photo session. At 5.30pm, the event successfully ended.
KDU Law Students was provided the invaluable opportunity of being Marshals at the event. Students were delighted and claimed that it was truly a humbling experience. Through this event, they had the chance to engage with industry practitioners, learned real industry relevance and real world applications which proof to be very beneficial for their academic purposes.
