On 18th May 2017, the Inns of Court Malaysia (“ICM”) held its inaugural dinner styled “The Inaugural Dining of the Inns of Court Malaysia” at the Royale Chulan Kuala Lumpur at 5 Jalan Conlay KL, 50450 Malaysia. The primary agenda of the event was to honour the retirement of the Right Honourable Tun Arifin bin Zakaria as the Chief Justice of Malaysia and the corresponding elevation of the Right Honourable Tun Dato’ Seri Md Raus bin Sharif as the Chief Justice of Malaysia; the Right Honourable Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Zulkefli bin Ahmad Makinudin as the President of the Court of Appeal of Malaysia and the Right Honourable Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Ahmad bin Haji Maarop as the Chief Judge of the High Court of Malaya.
The evening was graced by all members of the legal fraternity including Judges of the Federal Court, Court of Appeal and High Court, Sessions Court, Magistrates, Chief Registrar, Judicial and legal officers, legal practitioners, academicians and law students alike. Also present was the Deputy British High Commissioner, Bar Council President, President of Sabah Law Association and Director of British Council, Malaysia. The respective Dean of the law faculties of our esteemed Malaysian universities were all present. The Hon. Secretary of ICM as master of ceremonies initiated the event with welcoming remarks, followed by speeches first by President of ICM Tun Arifin bin Zakaria and then Chief Justice Tun Md Raus bin Sharif presenting the After-Dinner Talk. Guests were treated to 5 course meal with a vegetarian option accompanied by classical music played by a live band.
The evening was focussed to be a melting pot for all members of the legal world in an elegant setting with viking styled long tables – reminiscent of the dining practice of the Inns of Courts in England. Each and every table was diverse and inclusive, named after the different states of Malaysia, from Kedah to Johor, to Sabah and Sarawak. The combination of guests at each table spelt diversity where seating was mixed amongst seniors and juniors, whereby everyone could learn from one another. The eclectic mix resulted in an evening of vibrant engaging and networking amongst all present. The ICM Organising Committee pre-arranged the combination of guests at each table to ensure variety in demographics for a very positive learning outcome. ICM is grateful to members and non-members alike for a successful event and looks forward to continue hosting further such events.
